Community Choirs raising thousands for local deserving causes

11/11/2025

In the run-up to Christmas, Celebration Carol concerts will take place featuring local community Good Afternoon Choirs with over 2,000 people expected to attend. Bath-based music man Grenville Jones started the Good Afternoon Choirs 16 years ago and they now take place across South West England, South Wales and London. The Choirs meet in the afternoon on a weekly basis and are led by local talented musicians.

Each of the concerts supports a local organisation or charity and these are chosen by the choir members themselves. Special guests are children from a local Primary School and, over the years, many relationships have been built between choir members and the school.

At the concerts the children perform their own special Christmas pieces and the Good Afternoon Choir also learn Christmas items for their young guests and parents/families who always attend.

When each choir starts back after Christmas in January the choir leaders will ask the choir members to nominate and vote for the local organisation they would like to support in 2026, the choice is entirely down to the members. As well as the Christmas concerts there are additional concerts throughout the year who also support the chosen organisation,” said Grenville Jones, Founder of the Good Afternoon Choirs.

New Leader for Taunton Good Afternoon Choir

Grenville Jones, the Founder of 35 Good Afternoon Choirs around the West Country and beyond, is delighted to announce a new leader for Taunton Good Afternoon Choir. Good Afternoon Choirs are non-audition, community choirs for both male and female voices and there are currently three of these fun and friendly choirs:

Taunton Good Afternoon Choir rehearses on a Tuesday afternoon 2.00pm-4.00pm at Temple Methodist Church (Upper High Street, Taunton TA1 3PY). The Choir is now being conducted by Rob Tribe.

Rob is a Taunton based musician who divides his time between teaching music and performing. As a guitar player he spends his days teaching kids and adults to rock in several local schools, Guildhall Young Artists Taunton and privately. The rest of the time he's playing with local bands in a variety of styles from 50s rock and roll to modern rock and pop. A love of musical theatre often sees him in the orchestral pit for theatres all over the county.

If you would like to take part then come along to any rehearsal, alone or with a friend – either way you are assured of a warm welcome from both the choir and it’s new Leader! If you have any queries please call the Good Afternoon Choir office on 01761 472468.

Grenville says:

“Singing in the afternoon is brilliant, there is no hassle about driving in the dark and for further information on our choirs please see www.goodafternoonchoir.org. Come along and meet us.”

Search for new Leader of Taunton GAC

7/23/2025

The search is on to find a new musical director for the popular Taunton community Good Afternoon Choir.

The choir was started by Bath-based music man Grenville Jones four years ago who recruited Chris Grabham to be its leader. Chris’s musical experience is well known throughout the area and, over the last four years, has built the choir up to be more than 90 voices.

They rehearse on Tuesday afternoons from 2pm-4pm at Temple Methodist Church in Taunton but are now on their Summer break, starting back on Tuesday September 2.

“It was with great sadness when we learnt that Chris is moving to London to take on a full-time role at the prestigious Brit School in Croydon. His undoubted talent will enhance the teaching facilities at the Brit School. Sadly, that leaves those groups who he used to lead in Somerset searching for a new face at the helm,” said Grenville.

Image below shows Chris Grabham at Taunton Good Afternoon Choir’s concert last Saturday raising money for St Margaret’s Hospice Care. A sell out evening and a fitting farewell and swansong to Chris Grabham.

The search is now on for a new leader and Grenville Jones would like to hear from anyone who would like further information. The Taunton Good Afternoon Choir is a community group with a repertoire of popular music. They start back singing again at Temple Methodist Church on Tuesday September 2 – rehearsals are weekly from 2pm-4pm.

“Previous choir knowledge is not necessary. We want to find someone who is enthusiastic and talented who can take our Good Afternoon Choir on a new journey with concerts and fundraising performances. Anyone interested should contact Grenville on 07778 282934.”
