There was a fantastic attendance from prospective choir singers at the launch of two new community choirs this week in Devon.
The Exmouth Good Afternoon Choir tuned up for the first time with musical director Craig Northway at Trinity Church on Tuesday March 18 from 12.30pm-2.30pm with over 60 people attending.
The next day, Wednesday March 19, it was the turn of Sidmouth Good Afternoon Choir at All Saints for the launch of the choir with Maria Thorne as musical director from 1pm-3pm where over 50 people attended.
There are now 35 Good Afternoon Choirs across England and Wales and the project was started by Bath-based musician Grenville Jones 17 years ago. Grenville has a wealth of experience in conducting and leading evening choirs and his decision to bring non-audition community singing to retired people during the afternoon has proved to be a huge success.
Over 1,600 people now sing in the afternoons and the choir website www.goodafternoonchoir.org lists all the choirs and the talents leaders who are the musical directors of each individual choir.
“We certainly had a fantastic response in both Exmouth and Sidmouth this week. Craig Northway is leading Exmouth Good Afternoon Choir and Maria Thorne at Sidmouth Good Afternoon Choir.
“There is no charge to attend your first rehearsal and everyone is welcome to come along and discover the joy of singing in the afternoon. I started the Good Afternoon Choirs in Bath 17 years ago and plan to introduce more across England in the months ahead. The accent is on enjoyment, making friends and singing together and our Good Afternoon Choirs have also raised many thousands of pounds for local charities since starting the project all those yeas ago,” said Grenville Jones.
